Wedding ceremonies and marriage preparation in San Diego.

From the cliffs of La Jolla to a backyard in North Park. We learn your story and tell it out loud, then help you keep writing it.

Weddings in San Diego

Almost every beach and park ceremony in the city needs a permit from San Diego Parks and Recreation, and the good sites go early. Sunset Cliffs, the lawns above La Jolla Cove, Kate Sessions Park and the garden spaces in Balboa Park are the first to fill, often close to a year ahead for a Saturday in the second half of the year. A permit buys you a window and a footprint rather than the place itself, so plan for joggers, other wedding parties queueing for the same view, and specific rules on chairs, arches, amplified sound and alcohol. Confirm those rules with the city rather than with the internet, because they change.

May and June are the months that surprise people. The marine layer settles over the coast for much of the day and often does not clear until the middle of the afternoon, sometimes not at all. Couples who booked a coastal ceremony for the light get flat grey instead, and the golden hour they planned the whole timeline around never arrives. It is not a reason to avoid early summer. It is a reason to build the day around the ceremony rather than the sunset, and to ask your photographer what they would do with cloud.

A San Diego wedding is not one kind of wedding. The open coast is bright, windy and loud, and it needs sound reinforcement. The bay is calmer, warmer and framed by the skyline, and it holds a voice well. Balboa Park is architectural and shaded and busy with the public. Inland North County, out toward Escondido, Ramona and the Fallbrook hills, runs ten to fifteen degrees hotter, quieter and later into the evening. Choosing between them decides your start time, your dress code and how long the ceremony should be.

Access is the part couples underestimate. Parking at the coastal sites on a summer weekend is the single biggest thing standing between your guests and their seats. Lots at Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla and Mission Bay are full by late morning from June through September, street parking near the beach turns into a twenty minute loop, and the older guests will be the ones walking furthest. Book a lot, hire a shuttle from one hotel, or tell people the ceremony starts fifteen minutes before it does.
